The Gospel
The word "gospel" means "good news." This is exactly what the message of Jesus Christ is: the best news humanity has ever received.
The Bad News: Our Sinful Condition
None is righteous, no, not one. ... For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.
Romans 3:10, 23
Many people believe they are fundamentally good at heart, but Scripture reveals a different reality. "The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick" (Jeremiah 17:9). Our innermost being is corrupted by sin; we are rebels who consistently violate God's perfect moral law.
Jesus Himself declared:
For from within, out of the heart of man, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, coveting, wickedness, deceit, sensuality, envy, slander, pride, foolishness. All these evil things come from within, and they defile a person.
Mark 7:21-23
Our hearts naturally tend toward and produce wickedness. Yet Jesus taught that the greatest commandment is to "love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength" (Mark 12:30).
Has anyone ever obeyed this law completely? Have you?
When we honestly examine our hearts, we discover that Jesus' words are true. We are sinners not only in our actions but in the very desires of our hearts. We all deserve punishment before the holy and righteous God.
This is a terrifying truth.
A just judge must punish sin. Before God, the Righteous Judge, you stand guilty, condemned, and worthy of eternal wrath. Your heart is desperately sick, and you cannot cure yourself. The Good News: Jesus Christ Our Savior.
In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.
1 John 4:10
Jesus came to save those who acknowledge their helpless condition. He alone possesses the cure for our sin and its consequences. He declared, "I have not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance" (Luke 5:32).
The cure is found in the gospel!
Jesus Christ entered this world and lived a perfectly sinless life, completely free from the corruption of sin. He willingly took our place on the cross, bearing the punishment we deserve as the perfect, spotless sacrifice. He died, rose from the dead, and now reigns in heaven. Christ took our place so that we might receive forgiveness and eternal life.
The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners.
1 Timothy 1:15
You cannot cure yourself. Depend entirely upon Jesus Christ. He is your only hope, and He never fails to save those who come to Him in faith and repentance.
And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.
Acts 4:12
